Protecting Yourself from Fraudulent TRAI Calls
Phone disconnection scams involve fraudsters impersonating representatives from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) or telecom service providers. These scammers claim that the victim's mobile number will be disconnected due to misuse or unpaid bills. They use pre-recorded messages or live calls to create a sense of urgency, prompting victims to provide personal information or make payments to avoid disconnection.
- A Recent incident
In a recent incident, a 31-year-old man from Hyderabad fell victim to a sophisticated phone scam. The scam began when he received a call from someone posing as an official from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The caller informed him that his mobile number was at risk of being blocked due to its alleged involvement in illegal activities. To make the situation seem more legitimate, the fraudsters even routed the call to what they claimed was the "Mumbai Police" via Skype. The supposed police officials claimed that arrest warrants and freezing orders had been issued against him and that his bank account details needed to be submitted to the Supreme Court for inspection. Under pressure and fearing legal repercussions, the victim transferred ₹11.20 lakh in two instalments. The scam became evident when the fraudsters demanded an additional ₹2 lakh, which finally raised the victim's suspicions. He then confided in his family and reported the incident to the Hyderabad Cyber Crime police, who have initiated an investigation into the matter
